How do i curl my hair with a curling iron??

i want to know how to curl my medium length, layered hair with a curling iron to get long curly locks like jessica simpson and brittany murphy. everytime i try to curl my hair, i get a really poofy ';shirly temple'; type hairstyle. is there a certain way i need to hold the iron?? any help will be greatly appreciated!!

yes! Apply mousse/serum/etc. Separate a strand, clip the iron near the top of the strand while holding on to the end, and slowly pul the iron down a little at a time and turn the rod to begin curling the hair. This will give you a less poofy look, more 'refined' curls. You can then lightly comb your fingers through them to get the wavy look in desired places.
