How can I curl my hair with a curling iron?

I can never get my curling iron to make perfect tumbleweeds and hold it. My hair is a little past shoulder length. Help? How can I curl my hair with a curling iron?
I always do it in layers. so say i am trying to curl the right side of my head... i take the top layer of the hair on the right side, and fold it over to the other side, and then curl the bottom layer first, and then i put the top layer back on.

another option is to use 'curl' shampoo (i use pantene but i'm sure there's other brands) and then curl your hair after you use that. it stays better that way.How can I curl my hair with a curling iron?

If you curl it with a straightener it will actually hold for longer.

there are tons of tutorials on youtube! ^^
use it.. and hairspray
Instead of putting your strands of hair into the little clasp, take your strands of hair and wrap them tightly around the metal part of the iron, WITHOUT opening it.. Here's what I mean:

and hairspray the curls as i go.

it works for me.
