In order to get this look, I would use curliers over night, and even hot iron the day of, using hair spray to keep it looking great! Don't forget the bow/ribbion.

If the girls wear their hair in a high pony for competition (the usual) then put your daughter's hair in the ponytail the night before (clean, dry hair) and use setting lotion and little foam curlers to set the ponytail in little curls. Use a hair net (the kind little old ladies wear) to keep all the curlers in while she sleeps - just tie up the pony, not the whole head.
Next morning, slick back ';wispies'; with hair gel or use bobby pins that match hair color for the really stubborn ones. If absolutely necessary, you can gently take down the pony and put it back up, but it should be OK.
It's far better to use rollers than a curling iron.
