Curling irons provide even heat that is controlled by you. The irons must be made of the best quality steel so that they hold an even temperature during the waving/curling process. There is no one correct temperature used for the irons when thermal curling. (Just keep in mind that hair burns at 130 degrees.)
Temperature depends on the texture of the hair, whether it's fine or coarse or whether it's been lightened or tinted. Coarse and Gray hair as a rule can tolerate more heat than fine hair. Keep in mind to always (after heating) test irons on a piece of tissue paper. Clamp the heated iron over the tissued and hold for 5 seconds. If paper scorches or turns brown, the irons are too hot! Let them cool somewhat before using. Overly hot irons can burn, scorch, or damage hair and can discolor white hair. Thermal irons should be kept clean and free from rust and carbon. To remove dirt or grease, wash the irons in a soap solution containing a few drops of ammonia. This cuts the oil and grease that usually adhere to the irons. Fine sandpaper or steel wool with a little oil, helps to remove rust and carbon. It also polishes the irons. To permit greater facility in movement, oil the joint of the iron.
Always use a heat protective spray of some sort to your hair prior to applying heat to your hair. This will prevent heat damage.
Also a curling iron is not meant for everyday use. This will cause long term damage especially if iron (heat factors) are not used properly.

If it has lower settings, use them. Otherwise just try not to keep your hair in it too long. Before you use the curling iron, you should spray in a heat defense product to help protect your hair and seal in moisture.

Use heat-typed hairstyling product to use on the hair before you begin to curl it, or straighten it. Make sure if you have used a blow dryer that your hair is in fact dry before you use a curling iron on it. Also, do not have the instrument on too high of a temperature and do not leave in the hair any longer than 5 seconds at a time. If possible, do not use curling irons and blow dryers every day, that is very hard on the hair. Used to be a hairdresser, so these issues were common.
OK well that's easy just go to sally's beauty supply and buy this thing called beyond the zone (turn up the heat) flat iron protection spray its a orange bottle and spray a little on ur hair before doing it..i know that is mainly for flat ironing ur hair but it works very good for that too its about $5.99

If you have coarse hair, use curlers. If you have thicker smoother hair, use a curling iron. Hold your hair for 5 seconds maximum in the curling iron. Hope this helps!
get a conditioning spray (i use VO5 miracle mist conditioning heat protection) it protects your hair from the heat of the curling iron. it also smells good :).try your curling iron on the lowest setting and if it does not do much turn it up. experiment to see which setting works best for your type of hair.

To make sure you don't fry your hair, make sure your hair is completely dry, if it's not, the heat will burn those wet hairs and cause them to be split ended. To see of your hair can tolerate being curled, put the iron on the lowest level and gradually move up. Ask your nearest hairstylist, they can give you more tips on how to curl.
