Because flat iron is hotter than curling iron, also flat iron has more heat capacity, flat iron sometimes is a better tool for curling your hair.

i've never heard of curling hair with flat iron for long lasting curls.....
i think you should curl your hair with the curling iron but then get spray stuff, or mousse for long lasting curls.....
or you should get a styling shampoo for curly hair people.
